Ajo welcomes new priest, Father Jose Maria Corvera
Ajo’s Immaculate Conception
Parish has a new priest, Father
Jose Maria Corvera.
Father Joe was born November
9, 1964, in Butuan City in the
south Philippines. He grew up in
Cabadbaran, a small town in the
Philippines. He attended college
in Cebu City where he majored in
computer science. For a while he
worked for a rum company.
He was ordained a priest on
June 17, 1997. He marked his 25th
anniversary this year.
He came to the US in 2005 and
he served at the Yuma Immaculate
Conception Parish. Father Peter
Nwachukwu was his roommate
there and they played tennis to-
gether. Father Peter was Ajo
Immaculate Conception’s priest
for the last 16 years. Both Father
Joe and Father Peter were assis-
tant priests to the late Monsignor
O’Keefe at the Yuma parish.
Father Joe has also served at the
Patagonia and Florence Parishes.
Father Joe has two older sisters
and a younger sister. He is proud
that two of his sisters served as
nurses. Two of his sisters still live
in the Philippines and one sister,
Anna Maria Corvera Decker, lives
in Sun City with her husband.
Anna & Mike Decker can some-
times be seen around Ajo when
they’re paying Father Joe a visit.
When asked what his hobbies
were Father Joe replied that he
loved to cook and loves to eat. He
doesn’t know much Spanish but
his favorite word is “comida”.
He also enjoys playing the gui-
tar. Some of his favorite musicians
include Crosby, Stills and Nash,
Neil Young, Jim Croce, Guns and
Roses, and the Eagles. He enjoys
folk rock and country music.
Father Joe says he used to
enjoy playing sports when he
was thinner. Now he plays darts,
shoots pool, and has enjoyed tar-
get practice atAjo’s rifle range. He
used to play soccer at seminary.
He also enjoyed playing basket-
ball and baseball. “I wasn’t a great
athlete. But I had fun.” He reports
that basketball was a very popular
sport when he was growing up in
the Philippines. He likes to watch
basketball, soccer and baseball.
When asked what his goals
are, he said he hopes to foster a
community of believers who are
neighbors to one another, neigh-
bors who help each other when
in need, mentioning the Good
Samaritan as an example. He says
he is here to serve.
Father Joe says he is enjoying
the charm of a small town. He
likes the peace and quiet and re-
laxing atmosphere.
